The box art on Dragon’s newest 1/144 scale aircraft kit shows a pair of F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft soaring through the sky against the backdrop of a snow-covered Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountain. The illustration is appropriate, since the box contents include two Super Hornets that have flown over exactly this terrain. The twin-pack features a single-seat F/A-18E Super Hornet in the markings of VFA-115 and a twin-seat F/A-18F in the livery of VFA-102. The latter squadron, known as the “Diamondbacks”, is based at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Japan, and is deployed aboard the USS George Washington (CVN-73) carrier. In December 2009, VFA-115 “Eagles” arrived at Atsugi to replace their compatriots VFA-192. The “Eagles” are now a forward-deployed squadron too under Carrier Air Wing 5 in the Western Pacific.
Dragon’s 1/144 scale kit features a highly detailed fighter from each of these squadrons. The two model aircraft are finely sculpted, with their lower fuselages made from slide-molded components for greater accuracy. They can be loaded with a variety of munitions and an extra fuel tank from the generous selection included in the box. For greater versatility, the landing gear can be displayed lowered or raised, and the wingtips can be folded up or shown in flying configuration. Cartograf has produced some high-quality decals to depict the colorful markings of VFA-115 and VFA-102. These two Super Hornets are set to fly through the skies of Japan or beyond, and they will look superb in any model aircraft collection.
