In recent years, United has been adopting a new livery for the aircraft. The initial order for 767-200s included normal range aircraft for US domestic routes, and extended range versions for international flights.

United Airlines placed the launch order for 30 767-200s on 14 July 1978, specifying P&W JT9D-7R engines. The first aircraft was handed over to the airline on 19 august 1982 and commercial services were inaugurated on 8 September.
