Ansett Australia can trace its history back to the early 30s, when Reginald Ansett established a one-man taxi service using a second-hand Studebaker to carry passengers from Maryborough to Ballarat, and later from Melbourne. In 1935, he registered Ansett Airways and subsequently bought his first commercial aircraft, the Fokker FX-1 Universal aircraft.
In February 1936, Ansett Airways made its first flight from Hamilton to Essendon. Steady growth was seen in the years following with major aircraft acquisitions and regional subsidiaries established throughout Australia and New Zealand. The 90s saw the airline integrate with its Australian subsidiaries to fly under the banner of Ansett Australia.
Ansett Australia became Australia's second international airline when on 11 Sep 93 started overseas services to the Indonesian island of Bali. A total of four international flights were made that day. In Sep 94, Ansett Australia commenced service to Osaka and Hong Kong using Boeing 747-312s leased from Singapore Airlines.
In 1999, the airline returned its fleet of three Boeing 747-312s for the longer range Boeing 747-412 with a view to developing new markets in the Asia-Pacific region, and possibly into Europe. A new livery drops the Australian flag in favor of the stylised "A" and includes the Federation Star and the Southern Cross with a blue background. We honor the enterpreneurship of Reginald Ansett by bringing you the Ansett Australia B747-412.
