55128- KLM 80th Anniversary B747-400 Combi

The Royal Dutch Airlines ‘KLM’, ‘ Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij’ in Dutch, was established in 1919, it is the only company who’ve kept its original name until today. Eighty years ago, a young Dutch Airforce pilot ‘Albert Plesman’ and a famous aerodynamic engineer ‘Anthony Fokker’ discovered the potential of this new type of transport – airplanes, and thus created the airline KLM.

The Second World War forced KLM to cease most of its services, resulting in great loss. Albert Plesman went to the States to buy new aircraft and six months after the war, KLM is back in service.

KLM has continuously to expand its fleet with new aircraft types. Douglas DC-8 joined the fleet in the 1960s and Boeing aircraft was introduced in the 1970s and 1980s. The Boeing B747 was a revolution to KLM and the airline industry when this aircraft joined KLM in 1971. In 1975, KLM was the first to use a ‘Combi’ with cargo stored in the rear fuselage.

1989 saw KLM invested in Northwest Airline, such move greatly reduced the running cost of both companies. Today, KLM and Northwest are close partners in marketing, mileage schemes, routing, and airport services.

To celebrate KLM’s eighty years of success and the over stretch to the millennium, a series of events was held in Holland. In August this year, KLM has specially invited 80 reporters from over the world and stayed in Holland for 80 hours. They were arranged to tour various facilities and transportation services, which includes KLM’s home base – Schiphol airport and Rotterdam. Furthermore, during October 9 and 10, KLM will hold an ‘open house’ event in their Holland head office. Also they’ve partnered with Northwest to bring out the best mileage scheme in Asia.

Lastly, KLM special ordered 2,000 limited edition KLM B747-400 airplane replica. Each model is assigned with a dedicated serial number. Out of the 2,000 made, 1,000 models will be given out to guests and business partners, whereas the other 1,000 will be available to the public.
